We train and support a new generation of neighbors.

Neighbors Project is a growing movement of a generation of people living in cities who want to connect with their diverse neighbors to improve the neighborhood for everyone.

The movement was started in fall 2006 by a group of friends who were concerned about both the increasing polarization of our country due to expanding suburban sprawl and the polarization in our city neighborhoods due to increasing gentrification.

We looked around at our friends in our 20s and 30s and realized that many of us are actually ready, willing and able to help bridge those divides, but they needed a push. So we formed Neighbors Project to help people do what they already seem to want to do: Enjoy our neighborhoods while simultaneously making them -- and the country -- better for everyone.

We are now a new kind of startup social movement. We're an almost all volunteer, legally designated 501(c)3 non-profit, but we have a totally fresh approach to improving our neighborhoods. Neighbors Project is really everyone who takes these ideas and applies them to their neighborhood, but we're also guided by a Chicago Advisory Board and San Francisco Bay Area Advisory Board, and a National Board of Directors. These boards are supported by a staff of one and a half, plus interns. We are currently only working on the ground in Chicago and San Francisco Bay Area but will soon be expanding our on-your-street assistance to your city.

Our mission is to inspire and train members of the new urban generation to connect with their neighbors through projects that improve the neighborhood for everyone.

What We Do
Neighbors Project’s approach is to disseminate the tools, guides and inspiration our generation needs to integrate items on our innovative Neighbors Checklist into our everyday lifestyle. We start from the ground up:
  1. First we organize on the ground to find and support people in our generation who want to take on demonstration projects or events that synch with ideas on our Neighbors Checklist.
  2. Then we use what we learn from those projects to develop how-to guides and fun and attractive tools that people around the country can use to help them live an urban, neighborly lifestyle.

So basically we help our generation create thriving city neighborhoods that all kinds of people want to and can live in by making the urban, neighborly lifestyle easy, a good time and shiny.
