Neighbors Checklist: Condo Owners
Rehab, don’t demo, unless it’s an abomination. Whatever you build, make your neighbors proud to live next to your building. - Get rid of the fence in front of your building, or at least minimize it to make your building approachable.
- Follow the building code.
- Leave notes under your neighbors' doors when you are planning to begin a renovation project indicating the extent and time periods when noisy work is expected to take place, including your contact info so your neighbor can call or e-mail if things get bad (and you can't hear them knocking through the racket).
- Always contact management when you smell smoke coming from a neighbors apartment, when the elevator is acting up, etc.
- Pick up trash, including on your piece of sidewalk and the street in front of the sidewalk.
- Don't put out trash too early or leave empty barrels on the sidewalk too late.
- Hang out on your stoop; let your kids and the neighborhood kids hang out on your stoop, so long as they clean up after themselves.
- Avoid putting an air conditioner in a window facing the street.
- Organize an outing for all building residents (e.g., a bbq, soccer game, picnic on the lakefront, etc.).
- Offer to host condo board meetings in your unit.
