NEW LIFE FOR DEAD SPACES

Use Lakeview’s dead spaces to illustrate the story of an ever-changing neighborhood.

CHECKLIST

  • If you see an empty lot, find out who owns it and organize a neighborhood clean-up and turn it into a functional neighborhood place.

Project Information

Hey Lakeview people, are there spaces on your block that you find just plain depressing? Blank walls or empty windows that make a block feel like a no-man's land?

They don't have to be so depressing. We're bringing the life back to these streets with the New Life for Dead Spaces project.

The New Life for Dead Spaces project seeks to offer a temporary and immediate way to restore the human element to these dead street spaces by using them to connect members of a diverse community. The project team will partner with property owners who are interested in improving their property.

Neighbors Project will conduct sidewalk interviews with community members around "dead spaces" in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood to get to know how our neighbors connect with their neighborhood—what brings them there, what do they love about it, and what's their vision for their neighborhood. Their answers will be incorporated into graphical displays for the spaces so that our neighbors will, in effect, talk to each other about their neighborhood through the dead spaces. The goal is to spark some conversations about community and help our neighbors to better understand their neighborhood and each other.
