CHICAGO ELECTION SURVEYS

Neighbors Project surveyed aldermanic candidates in the March 2007 Chicago elections to see what they thought about the issues that matter to the neighborly.

CHECKLIST

  • Get to know all of your elected officials—in person. Vote, volunteer and hold them accountable as your representative.

Project Information

Does your alderman say hi to her neighbors? Do you feel like you can talk to her about ideas you have for improving the neighborhood? Does she know what a blog is?

Neighbors Project surveyed the candidates for the unusually competitive 2007 aldermanic races in Chicago and published the results on our blog. Chicago is known for its uncompetitive elections and hard-to-reach aldermen who wield a lot of power in their neighborhood. So not a lot of people vote in elections, which only makes this cycle worse. We put the issues that matter to Neighbors Project people in front of the candidates in the hopes that more people would be encouraged to vote and keep their representatives accountable.

Though Neighbors Project is especially interested in local elections, we're also excited about the upcoming 2008 presidential and congressional elections. E-mail us with your ideas for election projects, though please keep in mind that we are a non-partisan non-profit, which means that we can't and won't endorse specific candidates or parties.

Chicagoans can start ensuring that more people participate in future elections by volunteering to help register new citizens through the Logan Square Neighborhood Association:

Want to volunteer but don’t have much time. Volunteer with Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSNA) to help people apply for citizenship. One Saturday per month we host “Citizenship Workshops” where we provide people with legal support as well as help them fill out the N-400 citizenship application (where you come in!). Our next workshop will be July 14th from 9-1 PM at Nuestra Señora de las Americas Church 2900 W. Logan Blvd (Logan/Francisco). Volunteer as much or as little as you can. All volunteers need to go through a one-time training. Next training will be held July 9th from 6-8 PM at 2840 N. Milwaukee (LSNA offices). Spanish a plus but not  required. To find out more about our immigration rights work link to our website at http://www.lsna.net/ by going to our Issues and Programs tab. For more information about volunteering for this or any future workshops call Marcelo Ferrer at 773 384-4370 ext. 11 or e-mail at marceloferrer10@hotmail.com.
