FOOD IN LOCAL STORES

Encourage people to buy fresh produce from local corner stores, bodegas and liquor stores that stock it, and encourage more neighborhood stores to sell fresh fruits and vegetables.

CHECKLIST

  • Shop locally.
  • Say hi to your neighbors.
  • Walk, bike and take public transit (cabs qualify). Get rid of your car if you have one, unless you have a very, very good reason for keeping it.

Project Information

Fresh-picked cherries. Locally grown sweet corn. Exotic mangoes, papayas, plantains and lychees. (Hungry yet?)

Did you know that your local corner store or bodega just might save you a trip to the mega-mart when you need these and other fresh fruits and vegetables? By shopping locally, you support small business owners, avoid inconvenient trips to the superstore and are far more likely to bump into your neighbors. That's why Neighbors Project is supporting a pilot project in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood to provide social marketing and technical support for local corner stores that carry fresh produce and to encourage more corner stores to follow suit.

Cooking Locally!

As part of the Food & Liquor project, Neighbors Project partnered with national nonprofit Share Our Strength and Chicago-based nonprofit Inspiration Corporation to host a cooking class for people living in Uptown on Friday, April 25th from 6 to 8 pm at Inspiration Cafe. Class participants learned how to cook healthy, tasty, economical recipes using fresh foods purchased at their local corner stores or liquor stores. Each participating family got a box containing all of the ingredients that will allow them to cook the meal at home.

We had a great time slicing, dicing and eating with all the class participants. Check out the event photos here.

Thank you to everyone who donated money to pay for the food for this event! We truly couldn't do it without you!

This project is now part of the national Healthy Corner Stores Network, a great resource for ideas for bringing more fresh food to the corner stores in your neighborhood. Dig in.

And now, be on the lookout for the release of the ultimate eating locally kit: the Bodega Party in a Box. Coming to you ... this summer ....
