STREET WALLPAPER

Use Lakeview’s underused street spaces to illustrate the story of an ever-changing neighborhood.

CHECKLIST

  • If you see an empty lot, find out who owns it and organize a neighborhood clean-up and turn it into a functional neighborhood place.

Project Information

The Street Wallpaper project seeks to offer a temporary and immediate way to restore the human element to underused street spaces by using them to connect members of a diverse community. The project team will partner with property owners who are interested in improving their property. The main photo above is of one of the project locations: 1001 W. Belmont.

Neighbors Project will conduct sidewalk interviews with community members around "dead spaces" in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood to get to know how our neighbors connect with their neighborhood—what brings them there, what do they love about it, and what's their vision for their neighborhood. Their answers will be incorporated into graphical displays for the spaces so that our neighbors will, in effect, talk to each other about their neighborhood through the dead spaces. The goal is to spark some conversations about community and help our neighbors to better understand their neighborhood and each other.

Graphic Designer
The project will involve designing large displays to fill the windows of five vacant storefronts and other vacant spaces in Lakeview, Chicago as part of a community art project. The displays will be very text heavy, so strong typography experience is desired, as is experience with large-format print media. We're aiming for a clean, "young" look. This is a volunteer job with a small stipend. The work would need to be done around the end of June/early July. If interested in helping with this project, please e-mail Lee Crandell with a couple samples of your work by June 18.

Sidewalk Interviewers
We're looking for volunteers to conduct sidewalk interviews in Lakeview, Chicago on the topic of neighborhood and place. Interviewers will ask a set list of questions and record answers either in writing or with a video camera if you have your own. Each volunteer will need to complete at least 10 interviews between June 14 and June 22 and return completed materials by June 25. The interview answers will be incorporated into graphical displays for under-used and vacant spaces in the neighborhood so that our neighbors will, in effect, talk to each other about their neighborhood through their public spaces. The goal is to spark some conversations about community and help our neighbors to better understand their neighborhood and each other. If interested in helping with this project, please e-mail Lee Crandell.

Stay tuned.

We're going to be kicking the project into high gear over the next month, so please volunteer to help out. Right now we're working on securing some additional spaces and conducting street interviews. Any and all help is welcome!
